The Dot Drill: Twenty Shots That Expose What Groups Hide

Most people’s range routine is shooting groups at 100 yards. It is comfortable, it produces a satisfying artifact you can photograph, and it measures almost nothing you will actually use.

A five-shot group is five attempts at the same problem, from a position you have already settled into, with four chances to correct after the first. In the field you get one shot, from a position you just built, cold, at an animal or a target that will not wait. Those are different skills, and group shooting does not test the second one at all.

The dot drill does. It is twenty circles on one sheet, one round each, and every dot is a separate shot problem. Frank Galli developed it at Rifles Only in the mid-2000s specifically to break shooters of the group-shooting habit — and it is unforgiving in a way a group never is.

How it works

Twenty dots, four rows of five, one box of ammunition. You fire one round at each dot. Scoring is by penalty and the low score wins: inside the black is zero, touching the ring is one, outside is two.

The structure is the clever part. Row one establishes what you are capable of with unlimited care. Every row after that removes something — your dominant side, your time, your settled position — and shows you exactly which of those you were quietly depending on.

Why one shot per dot changes everything

When you shoot a group, your first round is a sighter you get to learn from. Rounds two through five benefit from feedback you did not have on round one. That is why groups flatter you: they measure your best after calibration, not your first.

One round per dot removes the feedback loop entirely. There is no correcting, no settling in, no “that one doesn’t count.” Each dot asks the same question a real shot asks — can you do it right the first time? — and answers it twenty times in a row, which is enough repetitions to be a measurement rather than an anecdote.

The support-side row deserves special mention. Almost everyone is dramatically worse on their support side, and almost nobody practises it, right up until a barricade or a piece of cover makes it the only option available.

Three sizes, drawn to exact dimensions with penalty rings and the par times printed on the sheet. One inch at 100 yards is roughly 1 MOA; work down as you clean it. Every sheet carries a calibration bar so you can confirm it printed at true scale.

What it costs you to skip this

You end up with a confident but wrong picture of your own ability — and confidence built on a bad measurement is worse than no confidence at all, because you act on it.

The shooter who only shoots groups believes they are a half-MOA shooter, because their rifle is a half-MOA rifle and their groups say so. Then the shot that counts arrives: cold, one round, an awkward position, a clock running. It lands four inches off and the explanation is always external — wind, a flyer, the ammo. The truth is that the capability was never tested under those conditions and was never actually there.

There is a second, more expensive version of this. A shooter who cannot separate their own performance from their equipment’s will chase the wrong fix. Unexplained shots at distance get blamed on the load, so they re-run load development. Or on the solver, so they start truing — and truing against your own inconsistency bakes shooter error permanently into the ballistic profile. Now the solution is wrong for everyone, including the version of you that shoots well. You cannot true your way out of a technique problem, but you can absolutely corrupt good data trying.

What it changes for you

The score is a number, so it trends. Run the drill monthly and you have a real measurement of your shooting, independent of your rifle, tracked over time. Very few shooters have that. Most have a folder of group photos and a feeling.

It also localises your weakness. A clean row one and a wrecked row three is a time problem, not an accuracy problem — you know how to shoot, you just cannot do it fast yet. A wrecked row two is a position problem on your support side. A row four that falls apart says your position build is slow, which is a dry-fire fix, not an ammunition fix. In each case the drill points at the specific thing to practise, and the practice is free.

And when you have a trend line for your own performance, the day something genuinely is the rifle or the load, you will recognise it immediately — because you will know what your own scatter looks like, and this will not be it.
